Sports Massage NYC, Focused on Your Body's Needs
Sports massage is designed to support the demands of regular training. It can help you feel ready to train, ease recovery and address the wear that comes with consistent activity. Techniques can include deep tissue massage, trigger point work, myofascial release and assisted stretching, chosen based on your sport, training intensity and injury history.
At Mudras, every session starts with a brief look at your posture and movement so your specialist has a sense of where to focus. From there, our specialists, each bringing years of hands on experience, draw on the techniques that fit what you need that day.
This approach is an extension of our signature BodyReset treatment, adapted for athletic training and recovery.
How Sports Massage Differs from Relaxation Massage
Sports massage and relaxation massage share some techniques but serve different purposes. Sports massage is geared toward training, performance and recovery; relaxation massage is generally geared toward everyday stress relief.
Sports Massage
Supports training, performance and recovery
Tailored to your activity and training stage
Targets muscles used in your sport
Adjusts with training load and recovery stage
Relaxation Massage
Focuses on general relaxation
Typically follows a consistent full body routine
Addresses general muscle tension
Less tied to activity level
Who Benefits from Sports Massage
Mudras works with a range of clients, from competitive athletes to people managing the physical demands of regular training, across sports including basketball, football, MMA, distance running and dance, among others.
Sports massage may be worth considering if:
You're preparing for a race, match or competition and want your body ready to go
You've just finished an event or a demanding training block and want support with recovery
A specific area, such as a hip, a hamstring or a shoulder, tends to flare up under load
You're working through injury recovery alongside a physician or physical therapist
Regular training or physical activity connected to your work has started to affect how you move day to day
We also work with younger athletes to support training and recovery. Depending on age, a parent or guardian may be asked to stay for the session.
Deep tissue massage for areas of ongoing tension
Trigger point work for localized tightness
Myofascial release to support mobility in connective tissue
Assisted stretching to work through a fuller range of motion with support
Cupping and gua sha, which some clients find useful for circulation and working into deeper tissue.
Most sessions combine a few of these based on how you're feeling and what the session calls for.
Sports Massage Techniques Used at Mudras
How a Session Is Structured
Consultation - A quick conversation about your sport, training and goals for the session.
Assessment - A brief look at posture and movement to guide where to focus.
Treatment - Techniques applied and adjusted as your specialist works.
Follow up guidance - Occasional input on stretching, hydration or scheduling, especially around an event or heavy training block.
Sports massage isn't a substitute for medical treatment. We coordinate with physicians, physical therapists and trainers already involved in a client's care.
Why Choose Mudras for Sports Massage in NYC
Mudras was founded by Yotam Kafri, a third generation practitioner with more than two decades of experience across Western, European and Eastern massage traditions. The practice is built around treating each client as an individual rather than applying one routine to everyone.

Many clients come to us through referrals from physicians, trainers and other professionals familiar with our work
Sessions are available at our Chelsea studio, with house calls, travel and event support arranged when needed
Mudras does not bill insurance directly. We provide an itemized receipt you can submit to your insurance provider for possible out of network reimbursement.
When to Schedule Sports Massage
Before an event - Sessions in the days leading up to a race or competition, aimed at supporting mobility and readiness.
After an event or heavy training - Sessions focused on helping ease soreness and fatigue.
Ongoing maintenance - Many clients schedule weekly or biweekly, similar to strength training or physical therapy.
During injury recovery - Sessions to support mobility, in coordination with your provider.
Frequency depends on your training and goals. Your specialist can help you figure out a schedule after your first session.
